For many folks, Indian Rock 1858 Schoolhouse in Amenia brings back fond memories of school days, picnics and old friends. As usual, for the last fourteen years, the picnic has been a great community celebration and the raffle has been one of the most essential fundraisers for schoolhouse maintenance and programs. Prizes have always been donated by our local businesses and crafts people. In addition to cash prizes there are many meals and services. The Grand Prize this year is a special donation from an old friend….an original painting by Father John Durkin, former pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia and chaplin at Taconic D.D.S.O. While serving as priest in Amenia and in Millerton, Father Durkin came to our picnic each year to welcome the community. After his retirement to Florida, Father Durkin became active in his new community. He attended an art class with his sister….and found out that he was a gifted painter! He writes: “About six years ago my sister wanted to go to the water color painting class offered in our community. She was a little shy about going alone. I offered to go with her…. but only for four or five weeks until she got settled. I went to the class never having taken an art lesson in my life. The month came and went. We meet every Wednesday in our clubhouse. I am still going and look forward to it. One day I was surfing the web. And looked up Amenia and the School House. There it was…the picture of it on the web. And an article. I made a copy of it. I began to think of the picnic and the good times we had in Ralph’s garden. I remember that each year I was asked to say a prayer or Benediction. The food was great and I found that just meeting and talking to people of Amenia and beyond was always enjoyable. I just had to paint it. You have the result. I am quite honored to have my picture of the School House as a prize.” RAFFLE TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE at Havens Real Estate in Amenia, Cole Insurance in Millerton.
